I’m talking about the authoritarian institutions in the economic sector: Corporations and other hierarchical institutions.
Authoritarianism doesn’t always mean it involves government.
I don’t support authoritarianism of any type. Not in any sector. Authoritarianism is a despicable word representing a despicable practice in any form.

In America, the desire for control of our neighbors (even at cost of our own personal liberty and privacy) has triumphed over our founders’ aspirations.
What can explain this shift in sentiment?
Quotes: Here’s two by Thomas Jefferson –
The Tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the Blood of Patriots and Tyrants.
God help this Republic if we do not have a Revolution every 20 years.
Explain the shift in sentiment – Successful leaders know that people are sheep. They will believe ANYTHING they are told by authority or "experts."

Please explain why.
Why would people rebel if authoritarianism was minimized?
A few respondents on here seem to be a bit confused. So here is the 2nd definition to authoritarianism according to dictionary.com, and my answer will follow.
AUTHORITARIANISM — of or pertaining to a governmental or political system, principle, or practice in which individual freedom is held as completely subordinate to the power or authority of the state, centered either in one person or a small group that is not constitutionally accountable to the people.
Yes the world would be better if we minimized authoritarianism because people would be more free and less repressed. Repression comes naturally with authoritarianism as well does poverty and a mindless sense of mob rule subsequent to the culture creation of such authoritarian governments.
As history goes to show crime and general decadence accompanies these things. And Authoritarian governments are generally quite aggressive toward other countries.
When people are allowed freedom the social vibe is usually at ease. There isn’t so much hate. More people make more money. And truly free nations tend to war less.
Always remember… The behavior of a nation vividly reflects the behavior of its government.

Right wing Libertarianism advocates taking power from the government and giving it to unaccountable private tyrannies, which I think is even worse than state tyranny, because at least the public has some kind of control over the state. The corporate system, especially in the 21st centuries are pure tyranny. If you’re inside one of these institutions, you take orders from above and hand them down below. This is the exact opposite of liberty.
You’re right. What is known as libertarianism today is nothing but pure tyranny.

I’m having a hard time distinguishing the two.
In other words, if I created an authoritarian dictatorship, and I supported my authority using metaphysical concepts, how would this differ from a theocracy?
It wouldn’t, they are essentially the same thing.
