Plenty of real world examples for them to go by. Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, Nikolai Chauchesku among others.

Very harsh restrictions were placed on Germany, plus they were forced to pay extreme reparations. The German people were offended and embarrassed by this, so when a guy came along promising to undo the evils placed on them by other countries after World War I and make their country the most powerful in the world, they followed him. That guy happened to be Hitler. Because the people of Germany were so desperate, they believe what he had to say and elected him. However, after being elected be became a dictator and turned his country into an authoritarian-based country.
