Topic: Classical republicanism

what should be the major purposes of government according to classical republicanism?

Classical republicanism is a theory that the best kind of society is one that promotes the common good instead of only one class of citizens… Civic virtue, moral education and small, uniform communites are the basic purposes of classical republicanism.

"The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government." –Thomas Jefferson to Maryland Republicans, 1809.

Why do classical republicanism and natural rights stress the need for education and preparation for citizenshi?

One of the human rights is education, and in looking at the course of human development
we can’t ignore the difference in outcomes for poorly & richly housed and educated people.
It’s socialists who speak in terms of waste and use of human potential- and rights to education-
not the other teams.
They hate us for being the only ideologues on the human rights side-
consistently- even when material support or action might be called for.

Christians, Can you help me with Romans 13: 1-3 when applied to a democracy in which the people are …?

supposed to be the boss? Who would you say has more authority in the eyes of God, the elected leaders are the people who elected them?

Romans 13:1-3 (New International Version, ©2010)

Romans 13
Submission to Governing Authorities
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.

I know many of you conservatives consider the U.S. to be a republic not a democracy so here is the definition of a republic from wikipedia.org.

United StatesMain article: Republicanism in the United States
A distinct set of definitions for the word republic evolved in the United States. In common parlance a republic is a state that does not practice direct democracy but rather has a government indirectly controlled by the people. In the rest of the world this is known as representative democracy. This understanding of the term was originally developed by James Madison, and notably employed in Federalist Paper No. 10. This meaning was widely adopted early in the history of the United States, including in Noah Webster’s dictionary of 1828. It was a novel meaning to the term, representative democracy was not an idea mentioned by Machiavelli and did not exist in the classical republics.[48]

The term republic does not appear in the Declaration of Independence, but does appear in Article IV of the Constitution which "guarantee[s] to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government." What exactly the writers of the constitution felt this should mean is uncertain. The Supreme Court, in Luther v. Borden (1849), declared that the definition of republic was a "political question" in which it would not intervene. In two later cases, it did establish a basic definition. In United States v. Cruikshank (1875), the court ruled that the "equal rights of citizens" were inherent to the idea of republic. The opinion of the court from In re Duncan[49] (1891) held that the "right of the people to choose their government" is also part of the definition. Due to the 1875 and 1891 court decisions establishing basic definition, in the first version (1892) of the Pledge of Allegiance, which included the word republic, and like Article IV which refers to a Republican form of government, the basic definition of republic is implied and continues to do so in all subsequent versions, including the present edition, by virtue of its consistent inclusion.

Beyond these basic definitions the word republic has a number of other connotations. W. Paul Adams observes that republic is most often used in the United States as a synonym for state or government, but with more positive connotations than either of those terms.[50] Republicanism is often referred to as the founding ideology of the United States. Traditionally scholars believed this American republicanism was a derivation of the liberal ideologies of John Locke and others developed in Europe.

The political philosophy of republicanism initiated by Machiavelli was thought to have had little impact on the founders of the United States. In the 1960s and 1970s a revisionist school lead by the likes of Bernard Bailyn began to argue that republicanism was just as or even more important than liberalism in the creation of the United States.[51] This issue is still much disputed and scholars like Kramnick completely reject this view.[52]

True. We are the government we VOTE for. However, as you know, Adolf Hitler ordered his citizens to round up and turn in all Jews for extermination. Since you are subject to your governing authority would you do this then? What if the anti-christ, claiming to be Christ & the new world leader, orders all Jews and Christians to be put into prison camps. Would you do this then too?

What communists, or secular progressive socialists want to replace with so called “western imperialism” is imperialism. The problem with communism is that if you give most people a little earthly power, they become prideful, overconfident, and less compassionate. Narcissistic. What if they set up and change government system, how it operates, and are not that way? The president shows nothing but compassion for his people. What happens eight years later when that president is now gone? Think of a president in our past that you, the reader, really really dislikes. Imagine him with almost unlimited power with a new government system…….. That’s why our founding fathers set up three branches of government. If the President is the Husband then Congress is his wife, and the Supreme Court holds both of them accountable for their actions. Just because you want a new fishing boat doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t check with your wife first. If not, then beware of the iron skillet. It weighs more than the other pots and pans.

So, in retrospect, do we not see the commonality between Darwinism, Humanism, communism, & progressive socialism? THE ANSWER IS POWER! Do we dare ignore history? Do we ignore history and teachings of the BIBLE? Is that wise?
Examples:
The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party (also spelled Ba’th or Baath which means "resurrection" or "renaissance"; Arabic: حزب البعث العربي الاشتراكي‎) is a secularist Arab nationalism/Pan-Arabism political party opposed to what it sees as "Western imperialism" and calling for the "renaissance" or "resurrection" of the Arab World and its unity in one united state.[1] Its motto — "Unity, Liberty, Socialism" — The Daily Telegraph writes that although Saddam Hussein never acknowledged the training of a youth brigade, he has, in several past speeches, spoken admiringly of the Hitler Youth. It is widely believed that he belonged to the Futuwa, a paramilitary youth organisation which was modelled on the Hitler Youth and was formed in Baghdad in the late 1950s.[10]

I. International Revolution
The contradiction between the revolutionary peoples of Asia, Africa and
Latin America and the imperialists headed by the United States is the
principal contradiction in the contemporary world. The development of
this contradiction is promoting the struggle of the people of the whole
world against US imperialism and its lackeys.
Lin Piao, Long Live the Victory of People ‘ s War!
People ask, what is the nature of the revolution that we talk
The primary task of revolutionary struggle is to solve this principal
contradiction on the side of the people of the world . It is the
oppressed peoples of the world who have created the wealth of this
empire and it is to them that it belongs ; the goal of the revolutionary
struggle must be the control and use of this wealth in the interests of
the oppressed peoples of the world.
(I.e., redistribution of wealth)

Examples of evil: Racism is an evil DISEASE past on by anger and hatred. Does not matter what the color of your skin is. The KKK. Adolf Hitler (Darwinist) and the national workers socialist party (NAZI) The Baath Party (it’s the link between Hitler and Islam.) Islam: what the west needs to know. ( Besides, at some point it would be good to stop spanking your child into submission.) Example would be the people living in Iran right now. And, the black panther movement. Communism.

Mathew 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, “You must not murder anyone.” Anyone who murders another will be judged. But I tell you, if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be judged by the council. If you say bad things to a brother or sister you will be judged by the council. And if you call someone a fool, you will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

Samuel Ch8 1 thru 18

What political tradition do you find more valuable for today, classical republicanism?

(Machiavelli, Harrington, Rousseau..) or classical liberalism (Locke, Smith, Mill…)?

Classical liberalism (Locke, Smith etc.) for me.

Mill became something of a soft lefty nut ball, so I would not include him in my camp. Rousseau is certainly one of the roots of all modern evils along with the psuedo-scientist Freud and the eschatalogical fantacist Karl Marx, The Frankfort School is at the root of the rot in the modern US but don’t forget the great Italian social Marxist pioneer Antonio Gramschi who laid out the "long march through the institutions" strategy for the evil minded that we are suffering from today. Once Gramsci figured out that Marx was wrong and the workers of the world would never rise up they decided to subvert the institutions of the middle classes and here we are.
