Topic: Collectivism

Can someone explain what conservatives mean by collectivism?

I thought collectivism was a bit like socialism in that a group or the government owned the land and means of production.

But, I keep hearing about collective salvation in conjunction with it. What are they talking about?
Can you be more specific. What did Jeremiah Wright say? Doesn’t Beck also complain that Jim Wallis believes in collective salvation? Why?

One of those "Beckian" expressions.

What historical precedent is collectivism based off of?

Seems like it’s mostly an intellectual pipe dream, competely dismisses objective reasoning and rational thought
If you read the founding documents intellectual ideas are backed up by history and accounted for by logical reasoning. This is completely absent in Marxism, replaced by psychological hog wash

Jesus and his disciples

pure commies

If collectivism is so great how do left wingers explain Cuba and the USSR?

There’s your collectivism, enjoy.
Marching the Path of Liberation- Why don’t you go live there then since it is so "great."
Galacto- I’ve been to Japan and what I’ve seen over there is NOT collectivism.
Galacto- China is becoming a capitalist country.

The liberals do not want communism. These countries you mention are communist. Obama and the Democrats are not suggesting anything like communism. The programs being proposed by the Democrats are socially responsible capitalism, a society that is run for the benefit of the majority of the population. Poverty cripples the nation, we need to stop the growth of poverty. The middle class is shrinking, we need to stop that. Education is necessary for our country to continue to compete on the world stage, we need education for everyone who is capable. Health care is a failed, ridiculous, disgusting system in our country. We need to provide quality health care and education and housing for everyone or we will fail as a nation. We are failing as a nation, failing our own people. None of this is remotely comparable to communism.

Why do people say collectivism is against human nature?

I think you mean to say, against what you were taught to believe. Would you consider stoning homosexuals or eating pork human nature? Well it is according to Muslims.

I’m not a communist, I am a National Bolshevik, we National Bolsheviks are right wingers.
SB1070 fan- In a sense we are Right wingers. We want to bring back the old traditions, not do what Putin did.

You see through your own eyes.

You hear through your own ears.

You eat and speak with your own mouth.

You think with your own brain.

If an ant or bee drone is separated from its hive it is not long for this world. It cannot find a better hive to live in. This is not the case with human beings.

I strongly disagree with your current point of view but would be happy to debate this topic with you. Unlike some here, you are at least asking questions that get to the root of the matter. Feel free to email me using the email link in my profile.

is canadian society based on individualism or collectivism?

what are some examples?

collectivism …. socialized health care! :)

what does it mean when my teacher says to find quotes on individualism vs. collectivism?

does she mean to find a quote with individualism vs. collectivism or does she mean to find a quote of either one

This means to find quotes that illustrate the differences and consequences between individualism and collectivism. A very good one to start with is from a famous text, "Meditation XVII", by John Donne (pronounced "Dunn"):

No man is an island, entire of itself,
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were.
Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee.

If collectivism was natural why would there even be any need for economics at all?

The study of economics would be irrelevant if people shared wealth equally voluntarily. Which they couldn’t anyway because there would be no incentive to work or produce, thus no wealth to share

"collectivist ethical principle: man is not an end to himself, but is only a tool to serve the ends of others. Whether those ‘others’ are a dictator’s gang, the nation, society, the race, (the) god(s), the majority, the community, the tribe, etc., is irrelevant — the point is that man in principle must be sacrificed to others."

"Individualism regards man — every man — as an independent, sovereign entity who possesses an inalienable right to his own life, a right derived from his nature as a rational being. Individualism holds that a civilized society, or any form of association, cooperation or peaceful co-existence among men, can be achieved only on the basis of the recognition of individual rights — and that a group, as such, has no rights other than the individual rights of its members." — Ayn Rand

if liberals are so smart why do they think collectivism works?

When you tax everybody for the benefit of all, that is collectivism. When you take away each *individuals* right to keep the fruit of their labor (their paycheck), to give to the government to do what the free market should be doing, that is collectivism

The problem with that term is that is not synonymous with his policies. Collectivism is a term that Stalin used to expropriate land from farmers and do away entirely with private property. No one in the Obama administration is suggesting that we do that.

Taxation: somebody has to pay for all these wars

Will the value of individualism vs collectivism be a concept that exists in re to USA Election 2008?

Specifically in regard to domestic policy.

There is no collectivism in the U.S. Where are you from?

I need a song for a powerpoint presentation that has to do with collectivism!?

Please tell me any songs that have to do with the idea of collectivism, or staying united! Much appreciated!
I was thinking of using the song that goes "We are the world, we are the children. We are the ones who make a brighter day so lets start living," because it refers to a big group of people.
