“Philosophy”, according to Roy, “Begins when man’s spiritual needs are no longer satisfied by primitive natural religion which imagines and worships a variety of gods as personification of the diverse phenomena of nature. The grown-up man discredits the nursery-tales, with which he was impressed in his spiritual childhood … Intellectual growth impels and emboldens him to seek in nature itself the causes of all natural phenomena; to find in nature a unity behind its diversity.”[
In his book Science and Philosophy Roy defines philosophy as “the theory of life”. The function of philosophy, in words of Roy, “is to solve the riddle of the Universe”.
Elaborating on his definition of philosophy, Roy says:
Philosophy is the theory of life, because it was born of the efforts of man to explain nature and to understand his own being in relation to its surroundings; to solve the actual problems of life in the light of past experience, so that the solution will give him an encouraging glimpse into the future.
Roy thought that in the absence of political freedom, economic equality is of no use and searched for truth and studied physical science, chemistry,psychology and philosophy extensively and abolished his own political party, Radical democratic party and his thoughts are known as radical humanism.
Roy’s thoughts are nearer to Gandhi and his school of thought. Both accepted the individual as the central point of all social thought and action.Both stood for decentralization of political and economic power, and both suggested party less democracy for purifying politics.
The fundamental differences between Roy and Gandhi are, Roy a materialist and rationalist while Gandhi was a spiritualist and relied more on his inner voice.
Roy says " so long as the purpose of politics is to capture power, we can not do without parties. But if we do not want to capture power, we can practice politics without parties. in the absence of a party, the practice of delegation of power disappears and also the constitutional sanction for the concentration of power. We can have a harmonious society, which will be a free society without destroying the freedom of the individual, where the freedom welfare and prosperity of society will be the sum total of the freedom, welfare and prosperity actually enjoyed by the individual men and women constituting that society"

According to Roy, the social struggle for human progress, the entire process of human evolution is nothing but the continuation of the struggle for existence on a higher level, where that struggle is no longer guided by instinct and natural selection but by intelligence, choice and reasoning.

I agree with Roy in relation to his observation that the human being evolves from a primitive, magical for of religion, which creates dependency. With this evolution comes an understanding of man as developing knowledge integrating social and psychological phenomena. I would say not all persons, because religious fanatics like Bush, Palin and Bin Laden for example, remain mired in this quasi religious primitivism forever.Roy thought that Communism was destructive of human freedom. That would only be the case with Stalinism, which was a perversion of Communism, however this would not apply to Socialism as practiced in some of the Scandinavian countriesJiyoti Basu, Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales and Fidel Castro., Lenin and Leon Trotsky, In any case Roy is a great philosopher and his thoughts must be taken very seriously

Why try to assign these very reasonable statements to this "Satan"? Don’t you know that "Satan" is just a Judaic and Christian knock-off of the Egyptian bad guy Set? This Set was a sibling of Osiris and Horus; Osiris was a man-god who became the redeemer of mankind and the mediator between God and man. He died and rose again and is commemorated in the sacred meal of bread and wine. The religious cult of Osiris spread to Judaea, where it was attached to the record of the life of Y’shua ben Y’Sef bar N’zret, a.k.a Jesus. It also spread to Greece, where Osiris morphed into Dionysus, and to Phrygia, where the Galatians lived, where Osiris became Attis, the consort of Cybele. Attis was born on December 25, crucified on a tree at Easter, and buried in a tomb for three days after which he rose again. The Christian version of this very old story is just the latest version. So don’t worry about Set a.k.a Satan; he has been history for a long time. And don’t imagine that the Christian version of the ancient Osiris story is somehow new or special.

I want words/concepts that represent community and acting together for the greater good, humanism, evolving together, creating a better world out of the collective intelligence/knowledge of society, etc.

To get you started, here are some concepts/words that I know of along these lines: nonzero(game theory), integral(philosophy), mantra(tools of thought), noosphere, etc.

That’s really a vague and bad definition for a word, whatever it is.

This caste politics is being promoted by the pseudo secular opportunists through the reservation system. It creates vote banks for them to exploit for elections.

It has not changed anything for the real poor in 60 years. This is not affirmative action for the oppressed, but Quotas for the oppressors who masquerade as the benefactors of the said, lower castes!

Reservations based on Caste has divided hindu society and muslim are the only ones that make a real difference through numbers because they vote en block, hence politicians are always trying to appease them.

Lord Krishna calls us to fight even your family if they support Adharma and stand with Dharma/justice in society but most Hindus who claim to be religious cannot rise above personal, family, caste, region, state, linguistic identity benefits to fight for true Dharma which is justice and righteousness in society.

Hindus have failed to understand this moral message of the Gita.

Will you vote for Justice/Dharma or an Adharmi pseudo secular opportunist from your own caste in the name of caste coalitions?

Most donot even understand Hindutva and brand BJP as communal, when Hindutva is about Integral Humanism. They fall for the media propaganda when the media itself is sold out to the Congress.

There is a small tab where you can select, "USA Questions only" and you will not view English language questions from around the world. Learn to use Y/A. More people are annoyed by Americans answering every question as if it relates to USA than otherwise!

Never anyone in my family record has anyone voted for either based on caste or pseudo secularists. The only time my father voted for Indira Gandhi was when she had shown the will power to break Pakistan into two parts and create Bangladesh.

Even Vajpayee called her the avatar of Durga during those days.

My stance is very clear. People who ask votes on the basis of backward vs forward or on the basis of appeasement of one community defying all laws should be voted out of power.

I got a mail from one of my journalist friends. He told me that Congress government and Communists are employing paid web commentators on web and Yahoo and Rediff boards to canvass for congress.

Looking at some of the answers here, I get the idea that he was right. We should clearly mark the paid web commentators from the genuine users.
