What did Republicanism mean to the people in the 1830’s?

I know they first believed it to be democratic but then it began to branch down during the reign of Andrew Jackson or so I believe. And then the people began doubting republicanism for some reason. I need to know why. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all.
Republicanism was an attempt to deemphasize the democracy in the Democratic Party and emphasize that we had a representative, that is a republican form of government.
But it also had an anti-slavery agenda which came to be its most important characteristic by the 1860s.
