Is Ayn Rand’s Objectivism a good political/social philosophy to follow or is it just madness?

Can there actually be such a thing as Ethical Selfishness? Is her new definition of morality actually moral? Is the individual more important than the collective?
…Can you at least explain your answers so that intelligent discussion can be carried out?

Back in the 1990’s I was what you’d call a Randroid. I loved her, her books (several), and even had a classic poster of her framed and hung over my fireplace.

I grew up, learned about the real world, learned about economics, and realized that she is, indeed poison.
