Employement Law – Health and Safety Urban Myths

Employement Law – Health and Safety Urban Myths

The UK Government has set up a panel of “mythbusters” in the light of increasingly outlandish health and safety decisions by councils and insurance companies. The absurd decisions often force employers worried about employment law consequences to take disproportionate and sometimes ridiculous measures to deal with everyday events.

As part of the initiative the Health and Safety Executive has launched a “Top Ten” of the most startling such myths.

Coming straight into the top ten at No.10 is “Graduates ordered not to throw their mortar boards in the air”.

The countdown is listed in full below, but the top three of the health and safety hit parade, sees “Trapeze artists being ordered to wear hard hats” avoiding a fall at No.3; while sticking strictly at No.2 is “Office workers being banned from putting up Christmas decorations”. And the No.1 is the blockbuster “Children banned from playing conkers unless they are wearing goggles”!

Minister for Employment Chris Grayling said: “All too often jobsworths are the real reason for daft health and safety decisions. We want people who are told they cannot put up bunting or play conkers to know there is no basis in law for such rulings.”

We have several employment law barristers that have had many discussions over this!

If you are worried about employment law ramifications in your organisation the Health and Safety Executive website says: “We want people to work with us to challenge these myths – the time has come to end the madness!” You can find out everything you need to know about this and other health and safety topics on their website.

In the meantime, that Top Ten of Absurd Safety Myths is as follows:

1.     Children being banned from playing conkers unless they are wearing goggles

2.     Office workers being banned from putting up Christmas decorations

3.     Trapeze artists being ordered to wear hard hats

4.     Pin the tail on the donkey games being deemed a health and safety risk

5.     Candy floss on a stick being banned in case people trip and impale themselves

6.     Hanging baskets being banned in case people bump their heads on them

7.     Schoolchildren being ordered to wear clip on ties in case they are choked by traditional neckwear

8.     Park benches must be replaced because they are three inches too low

9.     Flip flops being banned from the workplace

10.  Graduates ordered not to throw their mortar boards in the air

She’s got to deal with things such as fence hire

My friend is really excited, as she’s had the all clear to more into the house she’s been building for the last year. Obviously builders have done the majority of the work but she’s had a hard time of organising things such as digger and fencing hire along with budgeting, time frames and getting her hands dirty with work which she can complete herself. She’s found haggling for things such as fencing hire difficult as she’s always left it to her previous husband but I think she’s now really confident so it’s helped in many different ways and she’s now got some valuable contacts such as easyfencinghire.co.uk who provided her with fencing hire.

easy skirting boards – head office

If you're looking for the easy skirting boards head office, here it is.

skirting board and mdf skirting board

In the topsy turvey world of DIY, we get all sorts of people trying their hand at pulling their house apart, and then fitting it back together again in a way that boggles the mind. They will throw paint at the walls, shove lights into the ceiling, ram doors into doorways, and fitting skirting boards where the skirting board or mdf skirting board was destined to be. The problem with this is however, that standard DIY fitters have no clue generally as to how to fit the skirting board properly, and end up causing more damage than whence they started. We ask, we pray, get a professional to fit your skirting or you may end up a DIY statistic!

We’ll need scaffolding for painting the house

We’re looking at repainting our house and we’ve managed to find a handyman who will paint it for a good price but as he’s not got the contacts for scaffolding I said I would sort out the scaffolding hire. My friend has used a site called Tuxebo.co.uk in the past so I thought I’d give them a go too and so far they’re looking very promising for good scaffolding prices.

My sister and her skip for hire ideas

I worry about my sister sometimes and If you could have a screw loose she would have lost the screw years ago! She sorted out a skip for hire the other week. That’s not the problem but when easyskiphire.co.uk came to drop off the skip for hire off she told them to put it on the lawn. I told her at the time it would kill the grass and as long as she was happy with that it’s fine to put it there but she didn’t believe me. Surprise, surprise they came to collect the skip for hire yesterday and she’s complained that the grass is dead. I don’t think she appreciates it’s not the companies fault.

Bolt cutter are my best friend!

When it comes to me and keys it just isn’t a partnership which is made in heaven. I seen to forever loose them and my good old faithful friends the bolt cutters end up being used. I don’t know why I’m forever using bolt cutters and why I can’t just remember my keys and not leave them in silly places but I’ve got to say one of my best purchases have been my bolt cutters from toolsrus.co.uk

He went and purchased a cordless grinder

This weekend I realised I cannot leave my husband on his own in the house! I went out with my friends and I came back to find he’d gone out shopping and purchased an array of tools including a cordless grinder. I suppose we haven’t really had a decent tool collection so we needed to purchase things like a cordless grinder at some point but he literally went and purchased nearly everything toolsrus.co.uk sell. I couldn’t believe it! O well I’m sure the cordless grinder will come in handy at some point.
