Farooq Tariq of the Labour Party Pakistan, which is not the equivalent of the British New Labour Party, but a true socialist party more akin to the Scottish Socialist Party, visited Scotland in June to meet with like-minded comrades and discuss the situation in Pakistan, and the position and development of the left in Pakistan. In this video, part 5, he continues talking about the Pakistan Labour Party’s role in helping radicalise the people. By daring to criticise corrupt authority, stand up against the police and the military and occupy land to demand land rights in what is very much a feudal system and being prepared to risk arrest, imprisonment or worse, the people have seen that the Pakistan Labour Party is genuinely on their side and have been encouraged to stand up for themselves and against injustice and corruption, not without sacrifice as he says at the beginning of this video when, last year, the police and the gangsters of the military opened fire on a crowd of villagers who had gathered to demand land rights, and killed three. As a result, they occupied even more land in defiance and retaliation, and distributed the land to the families of those killed. In video part 4, he described the militant action of some women who used sticks (normally used for beating clothes to clean them during water shortages in their homes) – they used them on the local corrupt police to “cleanse” them and managed to prevent the police from stealing from them, as there is a culture of corruption among the ruling classes – the government lets institutions like the police and the army take more and more land and goods belonging to the people, but the Pakistan Labour Party has been encouraging the local people to resist. This is also the case with their trade union movement. Farooq said that from the beginning they decided they would fight against the military dictatorship and create an alternative society, but that they would not do it slowly with much talking instead of action, but rather, take direct action. Farooq himself was imprisoned many times under Musharraf’s government over 8 years, then again another few times after that. As a result of their action and their sacrifices lots of people have been joining their party from all over Pakistan, especially in the area near Afghanistan. In certain areas it is very difficult to raise the ideas of socialism because of the influence the religious leaders have and some of the comrades have been killed in suicide attacks, but even in those areas there has been good growth in support for the party. People are coming to the conclusion the current conditions in life are not worth putting up with, but unlike the Mullahs who tell people that the better life is in heaven after sacrificing yourself in a suicide attack, the socialists think that it is worth risking your life by fighting for a fairer socialist society, not by killing yourself and others, but by standing up for people’s rights to create a better society in THIS life, even if that makes you a target of both the imperialist, feudalist and fundamentalist forces. As well as forming a political party they have also formed a broad Left Unity organisation whereby they encouraged fellow socialists to agree not to write negatively about each other, even if some of them might have slight differences. They said “we have quite enough real enemies in the form of imperialism, bourgeois and military dictatorship as it is: better to criticise them in print than some minor differences in policies or tactics of the Left.” They have a newspaper, the only left-wing paper in Pakistan. They re-established a paper that was originally brought by Left Viewpoint from 1972-92. It was brought by the father of Tariq Ali who lives in London. They don’t have women’s/trade union/youth sections etc like in some traditional organisations but instead liaise with and support independent organisations and trade unions. They had a world social forum in 2006 in Karachi which 35,000 attended. They believe in co-operating with socialists both locally and internationally. Now some sections of left collectives have been coming towards the Pakistan Labour Party and they believe that with more militant action, sacrifice and working-class leadership, they are telling international solidarity they can build a party that will overthrow capitalism.
